Recruitment is the process by which one joins a fraternity or sorority. While some groups may participate in more informal/fall recruitment, all Greek-letter organizations participate in a structured spring recruitment process.
Potential New Member Rights and Responsibilities: As someone participating in the recruitment process, you have rights and responsibilities.
Joining a fraternity or sorority is a big decision. No one should go through recruitment and feel like they are still left with unanswered questions. You may want to think about your reasons for considering joining and use those reasons to help you determine other important questions.
Why do you want to join?
- Personal development
- Lifelong friendships
- Meaningful college experiences
- Leadership development
- Community service
- Scholastic support
- Social development
- Networking
- Lifetime opportunities for involvement
Some great questions to ask when going through recruitment are:
- What is the purpose of the organization? Why should I join? What aspects of the fraternity/sorority encouraged you to join?
- How will joining your organization benefit me?
- How can I get involved in this chapter?
- What is the time commitment in your chapter?
- What is your favorite fraternity/sorority memory?
- What does your chapter value? What makes your chapter unique?
- What are the financial obligations of membership? Are there any extra costs the semester you first join?
- What is required during the new member education process? How much time does it take? Can I see a copy of the new member education program? What percentage of new members are usually initiated?
- What is your organization's position on hazing?
- What does this organization do to support its members academically? What is the chapter GPA?
- What does the organization do for the University as well as the community? Can you tell me about some of your community service events?
- Are the members involved in activities outside of the fraternity/sorority?
- What is your organization's relationship with other fraternities and sororities? What do you think your reputation is on campus?
- Is this an inter/national or regional organization? What do you see as the benefits of joining one over the other?
- Have you had any problems with the university, inter/national organization or the city in the past?
